Celebrating your community business

Helpful definitions
We know some terms can be confusing. Here are the definitions we use and we encourage you to use them as well.
Who is Power to Change?
‘Power to Change is the think-tank that backs community businesses’
Please describe us using the blurb above, on your website or in other communications. Please refer to us a ‘Power to Change’ not ‘the Power to Change’ unless there is another word attached, for example: ‘the Power to Change project’.
What is a community business?
If you need some help describing what a community business is, we use this definition:
‘From pubs to libraries, shops to bakeries, swimming pools to solar farms, community businesses are locally rooted, community-led and trade for community benefit. The more the better for local people. There are currently 11,000 community businesses across England with combined assets of £875m, employing 37,000 people.’
Although it’s important, a community business is not a proper noun so keep it as ‘community business’, not ‘Community Business’, even when describing a specific organisation.
Project specific language
When referring to your involvement in a Power to Change project, it’s important to follow the guidance provided by the Power to Change team. The right language should be provided to you in the form of a short communications toolkit or email.
If you have questions about how to talk about your specific project, please reach out to: comms@powertochange.org.uk
Using our branding
We encourage you to refer to our brand guidelines when promoting your participation in a Power to Change project. It provides more details on how to use our logo and colors.
When using our logo to publicise funding, it’s best to use the term ‘supported by’ to contextualise it.
Writing press releases
We encourage you to talk about and share your participation in a Power to Change project, particularly with local media. Please use one of our press release templates to get started.
In the templates you’ll see ‘Notes to editors’ sections. They don’t form part of the main text but are included after the contact details and provide helpful background information.
