Power to Change invested £23 million in community businesses in 2017

Peter Jenkins

Interim Chief Executive, Power to Change

Today, we are publishing our 2017 annual report. It reveals that we invested £23.1 million in community businesses last year, up from £16.4 million the year before. From pubs to pools; from community centres to cinemas, we helped more than 279 organisations in England in 2017, and 52% of those are in the 30% most deprived areas of the country.

The report also shows how the movement is building. When Power to Change was established, our ambition was not only to support individual community businesses, but to shape a new market and grow a movement. The momentum is growing, the movement is real and it is strong. There are nearly 7,000 community businesses in England, with a combined income of £1.2bn, employing 35,500 people.

Alongside individual success stories, community business as a movement is gaining wider public recognition, and we believe the best is yet to come. Power to Change is three years old, and these huge achievements in such a short space of time reflect the passion and dedication of our team, our partners and community businesses across the country. We are grateful to the commitment and energy they have all shown.
